Frequently Asked Questions

What are the GST slabs in India?
India has four main GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential goods like food grains are exempt (0%), daily-use items attract 5%, standard goods and services 12–18%, and luxury or sin goods 28%.
What is the GST rate on restaurants?
Standalone restaurants charge 5% GST without input tax credit. Restaurants inside hotels with room tariffs above ₹7,500 per night charge 18% GST with input tax credit.
How do I calculate GST on ₹1,000 at 18%?
GST amount = ₹1,000 × 18% = ₹180. Total price inclusive of GST = ₹1,180. To reverse-calculate from an inclusive price: GST = ₹1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180.
What is the GST rate on freelance services?
Freelance and professional services in India attract 18% GST. Freelancers with annual turnover below ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some states) are exempt from GST registration.

What is GST Calculator?

GST Calculator is a tool for computing Goods and Services Tax on any amount across India's four main tax slabs. GST replaced a patchwork of central and state taxes in July 2017 to create a single indirect tax system across the country. For businesses, freelancers, and consumers, calculating GST correctly matters for invoicing, pricing, and return filing.

The calculator works in both directions: add GST to a base price to get the GST-inclusive total, or extract GST from an inclusive price to find the base amount and tax component separately.

How does it work?

Select the GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%) and enter the amount. To add GST: GST amount = Base price x Rate / 100. Total = Base price + GST amount. To remove GST from an inclusive price: GST amount = Inclusive price x Rate / (100 + Rate). Base price = Inclusive price minus GST amount.

For a base price of ₹1,000 at 18%: GST = ₹180, total = ₹1,180. To reverse from ₹1,180 at 18%: GST = ₹1,180 x 18 / 118 = ₹180, base = ₹1,000. The reverse calculation matters when you receive a price that already includes GST and need to split it for your books.

India operates a dual GST structure. CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) each carry half the applicable rate for intra-state transactions. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate. A freelancer in Mumbai billing a client in Pune pays 9% CGST and 9% SGST on an 18% rate service. Billing a client in Delhi, the same invoice carries 18% IGST instead.

The GST slabs cover different categories of goods and services. Essential food items are exempt. Packaged food, transport, and financial services attract 5% or 12%. Most services including IT, consulting, marketing, and professional fees attract 18%. Luxury cars, tobacco, and aerated drinks attract 28%, sometimes with an additional cess on top.

Freelancers earning above ₹20 lakh annually (₹10 lakh in some northeastern states) must register for GST and charge it on invoices. Below the threshold, registration is optional but some clients, particularly companies, prefer working with GST-registered vendors because they can claim input tax credit on those invoices.

Tips to get the best results

  • When raising invoices, show the base amount, GST rate, GST amount, and total separately. Clients who are GST-registered need this breakdown to claim input credit.
  • For B2C pricing, use the reverse GST calculation to confirm what your take-home amount is after the tax component is accounted for.
  • CGST and SGST each equal half the applicable GST rate. An 18% GST invoice shows 9% CGST and 9% SGST for intra-state transactions.
  • Keep the GST rate for your specific product or service category confirmed with a CA or the GST Council's rate schedule. Rates for specific items get revised periodically.
