Aadhaar Card Validator
Verify any 12-digit Aadhaar number using the Verhoeff checksum algorithm.
Aadhaar card status check starts with verifying the 12-digit format. Enter any Aadhaar number and this tool confirms whether it passes the Verhoeff checksum that UIDAI uses for format validation. A valid result means the number is correctly structured. Only UIDAI's myAadhaar portal can confirm whether the number is linked to a registered holder. All checks run entirely in your browser. Free, no signup required.

0/12Frequently Asked Questions
- What is an Aadhaar card number?
- Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). Over 1.4 billion residents have been enrolled since the programme launched in 2009. The 12th digit is a check digit computed using the Verhoeff algorithm. Aadhaar serves as proof of identity and address across government and private services in India.
- How to verify Aadhaar number online?
- Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number in this tool to check the format and Verhoeff checksum instantly. For confirming name, date of birth, or linked mobile number, use UIDAI's myAadhaar portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Format validation here catches typos before you visit the portal.
- What is the Verhoeff algorithm used in Aadhaar?
- The Verhoeff algorithm is a checksum method that detects all single-digit errors and all adjacent transpositions. UIDAI uses it to compute the 12th digit of every Aadhaar number. The algorithm runs the digits through a multiplication table, a permutation table, and an inverse table. A final value of 0 after reversing and processing all digits confirms the number is valid.
- Can an Aadhaar number start with 0 or 1?
- No. UIDAI's specification states that Aadhaar numbers cannot begin with 0 or 1. All valid Aadhaar numbers start with a digit from 2 through 9. Numbers starting with 0 or 1 are reserved by UIDAI and are never assigned to any person.
- What is the difference between Aadhaar and Virtual ID?
- Aadhaar is your permanent 12-digit identity number issued by UIDAI. A Virtual ID (VID) is a temporary 16-digit number generated on myAadhaar. Share the VID with services instead of your actual Aadhaar. The VID can be revoked and regenerated at any time. The Aadhaar number stays the same for life.
- How to check Aadhaar card enrolment status?
- Format validity is what this tool checks, using the Verhoeff checksum. For enrolment status, use the UIDAI portal at uidai.gov.in with your Enrolment ID (EID) from the acknowledgement slip. To check PAN-Aadhaar linking, use the Income Tax e-filing portal. For bank account linking, call UIDAI IVRS at 1947.
- Is Aadhaar mandatory in India?
- Aadhaar is mandatory for income tax return filing and receiving government subsidies under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). New SIM card applications also require it. The Supreme Court's 2018 ruling limits compulsory Aadhaar to government welfare schemes. Private companies cannot make Aadhaar mandatory, though many offer it as a voluntary KYC option.
What is Aadhaar Card Validator?
Aadhaar card status check tools verify whether a 12-digit Aadhaar number passes the Verhoeff checksum defined by UIDAI. Aadhaar means "foundation" in Sanskrit. UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has enrolled over 1.4 billion residents since the programme launched in 2009. Every Aadhaar number ends with a check digit computed using the Verhoeff algorithm.
Format and checksum validation run entirely in your browser. No Aadhaar number is sent to any server.
How does it work?
A valid Aadhaar number has exactly 12 digits. The first digit must be between 2 and 9. UIDAI reserves digits 0 and 1 as leading digits and never assigns them. Digits 2 through 11 form the unique sequence. The 12th digit is the Verhoeff check digit.
The Verhoeff algorithm uses three lookup tables: a multiplication table, a permutation table, and an inverse table. To validate, reverse all 12 digits. For each reversed digit, look up its permutation by position. Pass the result through the multiplication table. A final accumulated value of 0 confirms the number is structurally valid.
Verhoeff detects every single-digit error and every adjacent transposition. Swapping two neighbouring digits (for example, typing 34 as 43) always fails the check. Luhn, used on credit cards, misses some of these cases. Verhoeff is the stronger algorithm for a 12-digit number like Aadhaar.
Aadhaar Card Validator in India
Aadhaar is India's largest biometric identity programme. Each enrolled resident receives a 12-digit number tied to their fingerprints and iris scans. The number stays the same for life. UIDAI allows name or address updates but the Aadhaar number itself does not change.
Aadhaar is mandatory for income tax return filing above the basic exemption limit. Government subsidies under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) require an Aadhaar-linked bank account. New SIM card applications and LPG cylinder subsidies also require Aadhaar. The Supreme Court's 2018 ruling limits compulsory Aadhaar to government welfare schemes; private companies cannot require it.
Fabricated Aadhaar numbers appear in fraudulent KYC submissions. A Verhoeff check catches structurally invalid numbers before they enter your system. Numbers that pass the format check still need UIDAI portal verification to confirm the holder's identity.
Tips to get the best results
- A valid result here means the format and checksum are correct. Full identity confirmation requires the UIDAI portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Numbers starting with 0 or 1 are always invalid. Copy the Aadhaar directly from your e-Aadhaar PDF to avoid OCR errors from scanning the physical card.
- Share a Virtual ID (VID) instead of your Aadhaar number when a service only needs identity verification. Generate a VID on myAadhaar. A VID can be revoked; the Aadhaar number cannot.
- For PAN-Aadhaar linking status, use the Income Tax e-filing portal. For bank account linking, check with your bank directly or call UIDAI IVRS at 1947.
