GSTIN Validator

Verify any GST Identification Number by checking format, state code, and check digit.

Run a GST number search on any GSTIN to check whether it is valid. The tool verifies format, state code, and Mod 36 check digit in real time. A valid GSTIN also decodes the registered state, PAN number, and entity type: individual, company, HUF, LLP, or government body. All validation runs in your browser with no server calls. Free, no signup required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GSTIN number?
GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a unique 15-character alphanumeric code assigned to every GST-registered business in India. It encodes the state code, PAN of the taxpayer, entity type, and a check digit. Businesses must quote it on all tax invoices.
How do I verify a GST number online?
Enter the 15-character GSTIN in this tool. It validates the format, state code, and Mod 36 check digit instantly. For active registration status, check the GSTN portal's taxpayer search at gst.gov.in.
What does each part of a GSTIN mean?
A GSTIN has 15 characters. The first 2 form the state code: 07 for Delhi, 27 for Maharashtra. Characters 3 to 12 are the PAN. The 13th is the entity number, the 14th is always Z, and the 15th is the check digit.
Can two businesses have the same GSTIN?
No. Each GSTIN is unique to one taxpayer in one state. A business operating in multiple states gets a separate GSTIN per state. All those GSTINs share the same PAN but have different state codes and entity numbers.
What is the difference between GSTIN and GSTN?
GSTIN is the 15-character identification number assigned to a registered taxpayer. GSTN (Goods and Services Tax Network) is the government's IT infrastructure that manages GST registrations, returns, and payments. GSTN is the system; GSTIN is your account number within it.
Why does my GSTIN show as invalid even though I am registered?
Common causes include a typo, a blurry scan, or a digit-letter mix-up such as 0 vs O. Copy the GSTIN directly from your GST registration certificate and confirm all 15 characters match.

What is GSTIN Validator?

GST number search tools verify whether a 15-character GSTIN is correctly formatted and mathematically valid. GSTIN stands for Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. Every business registered under India's GST regime receives one. Suppliers, buyers, and accountants use it daily to confirm a vendor's registration before claiming input tax credit.

Format, state code, and check digit validation all run entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server.

How does it work?

A GSTIN has a fixed 15-character structure. The first two digits are the state code, identifying the state where the business is registered. Codes run from 01 (Jammu & Kashmir) to 38 (Ladakh). Characters 3 to 12 are the taxpayer's PAN. The 4th character of the PAN marks the entity type. P stands for individual, C for company, H for Hindu Undivided Family, F for firm or LLP.

The 13th character is the entity number, assigned when one PAN has multiple GST registrations in the same state. The 14th character is always Z. The 15th character is a check digit computed using the Mod 36 algorithm.

The Mod 36 algorithm assigns a numeric value to each of the first 14 characters. Digits keep their face value; letters A through Z map to 10 through 35. Each character is multiplied by an alternating factor of 1 or 2. Products of 36 or more are reduced by summing their base-36 digits. The total is divided by 36, and the remainder determines the expected check character. A mismatch signals a typo somewhere in the GSTIN.

GSTIN Validator in India

GST registration is mandatory for businesses with annual turnover above ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services. In special category states (north-eastern states and hill states), the threshold drops to ₹10 lakh. Once registered, a business must print its GSTIN on every tax invoice it issues.

Buyers can claim input tax credit only against invoices bearing a valid, active GSTIN. Fabricated GSTINs are a documented fraud vector. Unscrupulous sellers print fake GSTINs on invoices, charge GST from buyers, and never deposit it with the government. Buyers who pay that tax cannot recover the credit during GST return reconciliation. A format and check-digit validation catches obvious fakes before you even check the GSTN portal.

B2B procurement systems increasingly block payment against invoices with unverifiable GSTINs. A quick validation before processing a new supplier's first invoice has become standard practice in finance teams.

Tips to get the best results

  • A valid result here means the format and check digit are correct. It does not confirm the GSTIN is currently active. For active status, cross-check on the GST portal's taxpayer search at gst.gov.in.
  • Copy the GSTIN directly from the invoice rather than retyping it. One transposed character fails the check digit test and is easy to miss when keyed manually.
  • The state code in the GSTIN should match the supplier's invoice address state. A mismatch is worth investigating before paying.
  • A business with registrations in multiple states has separate GSTINs for each state. All share the same PAN but carry different state codes and entity numbers.
